Bauman's Cider - Amphora Mountain Rose (750 mL)
Bauman's Cider - Amphora Mountain Rose (750 mL)
Baumans Cider's Amphora Mountain Rose puts a unique twist on the cidery's annual release of a Mountain Rose cider. A natural rosé cider, made 100% from Airlie Red apples (a.k.a. Mountain Rose). This red-fleshed apple was discovered and cultivated near Corvallis, Oregon. It is known by many names and used by many of the best cider-makers in the Pacific Northwest. Bauman's collects their allotment of Airlie Red from their native orchard at Rainshine Farm, and every year releases one of the most stunning single varietal Airlie Red ciders.
This bottle is from the 2025 vintage/harvest, which their standard Mountain Rose cider won the silver medal for Red-Flesh Dry cider category in the Northwest Cider Cup. With this bottling/batch, the juice was fermented in an Amphora.
Amphora pots made of clay have been used to make and transport wine for 1,000s of years (as many as 8,000 years according to old archaeological records). Still used with regularity in many wine making regions around the world for it's host of benefits, including temperature control in warmer climates where the Amphora pots can be buried in the ground to keep cooler. Modern wine makers are increasingly experimenting with clay Amphora for fermentation and bulk aging of wine and cider.
Amphora can be thought of as a middle ground between steel and oak or wood barrels. Stainless steel allows for an oxygen-free environment which limits any wild or unwanted flavors into the cider. Oak, on the other hand, allows for ample oxygen to reach the juice, while the wood’s tannins can also affect the aromas and flavors of the cider. Like oak, clay is porous, so it does allow for some oxygen - giving the wine a deep and rich texture; but like steel it’s a neutral material that won’t impart any additional flavors.
Why we love Bauman's Cider: Bauman's Cider is an award winning cidery based in Oregon's Willamette Valley, just south of Portland. Christine Walter is a fifth-generation farmer and the head cidermaker at Bauman's. Bauman's Farm in Gervais, Oregon was originally homesteaded by her Great-Great-Grandmother Elizabeth and her sons Stephen and Leo in 1895. In the early 1900’s, Stephen began making cider on the farm for family and friends alike to enjoy. Upon learning of her family's history of making cider, and armed with a degree in biochemistry, Christine has revived her Great-Grandpa Stephen’s legacy by blending modern cidermaking with heritage methods using fruit grown and harvested on their own farm, and in partnership with other orchardists in the region.
The fruit grown in the Willamette Valley is highly regarded and makes for some excellent cider. Bauman's Cider includes four distinct product lines that range from juicy and modern, to traditional and nuanced. Whether you prefer traditional ciders or modern, flavored ciders, Bauman's Cider truly has something for everyone! Their traditional ciders are amongst some of our favorite American ciders, and include a series of single-varietal ciders and artfully crafted blends. Bauman's recently opened tasting room in Portland, Oregon - Bauman's On Oak - is one of the finest cider & dining experiences anywhere in the U.S. We're pleased to offer a wide variety of Bauman's Ciders and make them available for cider fans to have them shipped across the country.
